Over the last 12+ months, BetterUp Labs has partnered with Stanford’s Social Media Lab to follow 10,000+ workers across 18 industries to understand how AI was changing their lives and what they needed from their managers and organizations in response.

Across our dataset, two different personas emerged: we call them Pilots and Passengers.

Pilots are thrivingKnown for their unique blend of optimism and agency, Pilots are embracing AI at an exponential rate. Their positive outlook on AI's potential for the future, coupled with their confidence to navigate change, positions them as leaders in adapting to this transformative technology.

Passengers are strugglingPassengers, by contrast, tend to be pessimistic and have low agency, leading to a general fear of AI and negative feelings toward work. Their reluctance is reflected in minimal AI usage, with many avoiding it entirely in the workplace.

The research findings uncover:

  • Who is embracing AI and change, who isn’t, and why
  • Why employee sentiment has profound implications for your organization
  • What frontline managers need to effectively drive employee mindset—and why their roles are so critical
  • How you can leverage the research to boost productivity, loyalty, performance, and innovation
